May 2019 Goals

Spring craft shows are over. Some went okay, some were duds. Facebook and Etsy sales, however, went very well.  Now I shift gears, finishing up orders and prepping for the July Street Fest. Last year was my first year doing it, and even though it was the most expensive show I've ever done, it came out best in net sales of any of the 76 shows I have done since 2013. So this year, I'm gearing up to beat that record!

So, goals for May:

  • Finish order of 3 in 1 Safari Elephant Blanket Finished 5/11
  • Finish order of rhesus monkey DONE
  • Get Etsy listings up to 100 listings - 5/21 - DONE
  • Photograph, weigh and inventory new yarn acquisitions (thrift store purchase + consolation purchase using Joanns gift card) DONE
  • Make 10 bottle slings
    Bottle Sling #1
    #2
#3 done. I now have 25 in stock!
#4 & #5 - As long as I had the yarn out, I finished it off!

  •  #6 black & #7 Morning Glory Blue
    # 8 & #9 were purple, finished during a 3-hour wait at the car dealer...
Almost done with #10 - a beige one.
Finished two from that yarn... then a pink one, so I was an overachiever on this point! 12 and counting!
    • Make 2 mermaids - DONE

    One Down, One to Go!

  • Make two tiny unicorns
    Unicorn #1 in progress
#1 Done and listed on Etsy: Baby Unicorn
  • #2 done - Sunny the Unicorn

  • Make 1 sloth DONE

  • Were geckos on the list? Oops, no, but I made some anyways! It's always a good day for geckos! Mom & Baby Gecko

Pinkosaurus wasn't on my to-do list, either... but I wanted to make something fun and quick to celebrate finishing the blanket portion of the elephant blanket.

And then I started a green sparkly gecko...
A cute little nest of baby owls wasn't on the list either...

Sparkly gecko needed a baby gecko, I guess...

Someone on Facebook suggested that I make a Baby Groot

Leftover yarn from the elephant blanket became a baby shark...

    Another Facebook suggestion: a butterfly!
Maybe I should change that "Make 2 Mermaids" to "Make 2 dragons"... since I participated in a Dragon Crochet-Along, and got an order for a dragon...
Rose Dawn the Spring Dragon, from the Spring Dragons CAL (Pattern by Maritsa Piper)

Got an order for a dragon, where I worked without a pattern, just looking at some pictures. I think he turned out cute!

And since I was on a dragon kick...
This dragon comes with a taco and a little jar of mild salsa
Also made an Albino Pacman Frog.
    And another dragon...

Filling in the month of May with various projects like this flying pig!

    Waste not...

A recent post on Facebook got me thinking... someone posted a picture of a project she started with a variegated yarn. She said she didn't like the way the pattern was turning out, so she threw it away... yarn and all! Yikes! That just sounded so wasteful to me!

I follow a maker on Facebook who strives for zero waste. She goes to thrift shops and buys blankets and pajamas and turns them into cute little monsters. She uses as much material as she can for her toys, and chops up the remaining scraps to use as stuffing. (You can check her out at Lu and Ed )

That got me thinking about how I could put less of my "leftovers" into the garbage.

Over the years, I have collected quite the stash of yarn. I think there have been five or six times when I was given a large collection of yarn from an estate, house-cleaning or move.
A bag of yarn that appeared in my office one day... took a week to find out who gave it to me!

Yarn inherited when a co-worker moved out of state.

I try to use up all the yarn I've been given. Sometimes it calls for creativity... using multiple strands of thin yarn, or combining it with a different color. I try to find projects to use up unusual colors or textures.

When I want to start a project, I check through my online yarn inventory on Ravelry. I can sort it by color, yarn thickness, or amount of yarn I have. For many projects, I just need to go "yarn shopping" in the basement...

There are two more totes since this picture was taken.

After I finish a project, I usually have leftover yarn. Usually I use my yarn winder to make it into a neat little cake, and it goes into a cardboard tray.
This makes it easier to see at a glance what I have to use up. Once in a while, I will go through the trays, weighing, photographing and sorting the yarn into the color-specific bins. It's easier to just leave it in the trays and use it up, though! 😁

Some balls end up in these pretzel bins - sorted by color (there are seven of them!)

Sometimes, the yarn leftover is too small to make it into the trays.

I have three options for those "little scraps"... at the back of the picture is a one-gallon Ziploc bag for small balls of yarn. If it's walnut-size or smaller, it goes into that bag. That comes in handy for stuff like striped snakes, crazy hair on monsters, or accents like flowers and bows.

On the right side, there's a smaller bag that holds yarn that's not even big enough to wind into a ball. When I finish sewing a project and have a 6" piece of yarn left, it goes in that bag. Those pieces come in handy for the sprinkles on donuts, or for embroidering faces on small stuffed animals. My husband is glad that I'm not tossing little bits of yarn, because he has found mouse nests partially made of yarn in his air filter! I don't know where the mice got the yarn, but I'm doing my best to keep it away from them!

    Donut holes with sprinkles!

And at the front of the picture, I have a small jelly jar that I put really small pieces of yarn into. They will be used as stuffing for small projects.

This was my project box for my last craft show. I was making donuts and donut holes, so I had a lot of brown yarn. I would put white "frosting" on the donut and use my scrap yarn bags for sprinkles!

I try to keep other trash to a minimum too. When I finish a skein of yarn, the paper yarn band goes into the recycling bin. I use recycled boxes to ship orders. I'm always claiming the empty k-cup boxes at the office! And if I really don't like the way a project is turning out, I will tear it out and reuse the yarn for something else!

I notice a difference in the amount of trash I generate. I have a 32-ounce plastic cup next to my chair that I put garbage into. I used to empty it every other day... and now I barely put anything into it!

April Goals - No Fooling Around, Stay on Track!

March was a record-setting month for sales. I had three craft shows and got a huge custom order for seven extra large amigurumi. Each one is taking 3-5 days of work (depending on the day... I get in more craft time on weekends). So, in April, I want to really focus on catching up:

    Catch up with the order:
      > Finish order of 7 dolls - DONE

Catch up with the scrap yarn that is accumulating
      > 15 scrap yarn projects
Yarn left over from projects goes into these trays until I use it or photograph it, weigh it, and store it in color-specific totes.
It's easier to just use it up!
    Scrap Project #1
I made a cute little donut to keep this guy happy while he heads to WI!
Since Butter Lambs sell well around Easter, I finished one up before a craft show... and it sold at that show. So Butter Lambs are scrap project #2 & #3.

I made another one at the show... right now he's the only lamb I have left in stock!
#4 Made up another mini lamb

    #5 A peppermint sprinkle donut

    #6 Want fries with that?

#7 Another butter lamb... special order on Etsy

    #8 Scrappy Snake

    #9 Butter Lamb
    #10 - A gecko that I started a few weeks ago

#11 - A cute little octopus... because the free pattern caught my eye!
    #12 - Peachie the Gecko
#13 - Donut holes to finish up an order

    #14 Baby Gecko

    #15 & #16 Heart & Baby Gecko

Catch up with my finances: after paying for 2018 sales tax and some fall 2019 shows, my spreadsheet is in the red... I need to keep spending in check! (Down to $49 in the red... hopefully will be in the black after Saturday's craft show! Nope. Mileage expense of getting to show 15.5 miles away exceeded sales from that show...only one $5 sale.) 4/25 update - only $20 in the red... hoping to get a few more Etsy sales, or do well at Saturday's craft show and get back in the black!

      > No yarn purchases unless needed for order
This is really tough, because a woman in one of my online groups is selling off her yarn at good prices, to get money for a down payment on a house. I would really like to help her out... but I really need to use up what I have!
Well, didn't keep this resolution... when I set a new record for April sales, I treated myself to $12 in yarn from a thrift shop. Then, after a disastrous show on 4/27 (paid $30 for the table, had $0 in sales), I went shopping at Joann's and came home with a pretty big bag of yarn! (All on sale, or with a coupon, of course! Between a gift card and Ibotta cash, I came out ahead!)

    Catch up with other deadlines:
      > Finish Swan CAL - Started 4/4 - Finished 4/9

      > Finish Cowl Test - DONE
First time working with silk yarn. It's nice and soft!
